Writing in Uncertainty

Hey there. Tim here with your weekly dose of Copyblogger.

A quick heads up: Yesterday, we published our latest masterclass, Systems and Strategies for Next-Level SEO. I received many great responses after the class, and I know you'll get a lot out of it too.

Enjoy this week's newsletter.

1. When You Don't Feel Like Writing, Do You Take a Break or Keep Working?

Sometimes, you can hit the wall when it comes to your creative writing. So, what do you do when the words don't come your way? Do you give up? Do you muscle through?

Stefanie Flaxman posted some of her most useful tips and advice on how to push through writer's block:

Since I regularly encounter this scenario, I've come up with a quick test that helps me choose the right path.

Ask yourself:

Is your creative energy truly drained or are you just feeling lazy?

If I think I'm feeling lazy (honesty is required here), I keep writing … but the test isn't finished.

The difference between success and failure is found in the minutes and hours grinding through the work that you weren't inspired to do.

2. Seth Godin on "The Practice"

This week, my guest is the legendary Seth Godin.

Seth recently released a new book, The Practice. It's a brilliant concept and during our interview, he guides me through the process of living in the practice and how it's the creative work we do that shines a light on the world and becomes our contribution to ourselves and others.

It was a privilege to speak with Seth. His guidance and wisdom will help you on your path to building a successful business, while also generously sharing your art with the world.

3. 101 Ways to Make More Sales Online

If you're trying to make money online, sooner or later you have to face it: Conversion. That intimidating topic — how to get more buyers from the same amount of traffic.

The only reason conversion is intimidating is that there are a lot of places you can go astray. Most of them aren't that hard to fix, but little problems can keep you from getting the conversion you should have.

Here are 101 fixes — some small, some big — for making more sales online.

Tim's Take: Writing in Uncertainty

These are uncertain times. 2020 has been full of uncertainty for all of us.

When we write, we want certainty that our work will be good or that our newest blog post will "go viral" or that our marketing will lead to sales.

Wouldn't that be nice?

The hard part of writing isn't so much the writing itself, but rather dealing with the uncertainty of the outcome.

  • What will people think?
  • How will people react?
  • Will this client like what I wrote?
  • Will anyone even read this?

Yet, that's also where the magic happens.

When we live with uncertainty and do the work required without focusing on the outcome, that's when we're open to true success.
